Comparison of CHROMagar Salmonella medium and xylose-lysine-desoxycholate and Salmonella-Shigella agars for isolation of Salmonella strains from stool samples.

The growth and appearance of 115 stock Salmonella isolates on a new formulation of CHROMagar Salmonella (CAS) medium were compared to those on xylose-lysine-desoxycholate agar (XLD), Salmonella-Shigella agar (SS), and Hektoen enteric agar (HEA) media. CAS medium was then compared prospectively to XLD and SS for the detection and presumptive identification of Salmonella strains in 500 consecutiv...

Evaluation of five new plating media for isolation of Salmonella species.

A three-phase study was conducted to compare Hektoen enteric agar (HE), Rambach agar (Ra), SM-ID medium (SM), xylose-lysine-Tergitol 4 agar (XLT4), novobiocin-brilliant green-glycerol-lactose agar (NBGL), and modified semisolid Rappaport-Vassiliadis medium (MSRV) for the recovery of nontyphoid salmonellae from stool specimens. After evaluation of the first two phases, which resulted in the elim...

Distribution, diversity, and seasonality of waterborne salmonellae in a rural watershed.

Salmonella outbreaks from contaminated water and nonanimal foods (e.g., produce) are increasingly reported. To address the environment as a potential source of pathogenic Salmonella, we investigated levels of salmonellae and the geographic and temporal variation of Salmonella serotypes from surface waters in a region of Georgia (United States) with a history of high salmonellosis case rates. Mo...

An evaluation of the performance of XLD, DCA, MLCB, and ABC agars as direct plating media for the isolation of Salmonella enterica from faeces.

AIMS To compare the performance of four media, singly and in combination, as direct plating media for the isolation of Salmonella enterica from human faeces. METHODS Two thousand four hundred and nine routine, faecal samples received by four laboratories were inoculated on to xylose lysine desoxycholate (XLD), desoxycholate citrate (DCA), mannitol lysine crystal violet brilliant green (MLCB),...

Salmonellosis in Lagos, Nigeria: Incidence of Plasmodium falciparum-associated Co-infection, Patterns of Antimicrobial Resistance, and Emergence of Reduced Susceptibility to Fluoroquinolones

The present study was undertaken to examine the status of antimicrobial resistance in Salmonella-associated diseases, by verifying possible emergence of reduced susceptibility to fluoroquinolones in Salmonella isolates and determining the incidence of Plasmodium falciparum-associated co-infection with Salmonella serotypes. Antimicrobial resistance in clinical isolates of Salmonellae was examine...
